Poetry NI: Poems for Holocaust Memorial Day 2016

I have a haiku sequence published in the online anthology Poems for Holocaust Memorial Day 2016, from Poetry NI.

27 January is the day for everyone to remember the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust, and the millions of people killed by Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur. 27 January marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp. Poetry NI marks Holocaust Memorial Day 2016 with the release of this online anthology of work by poets throughout the whole of Ireland, reflecting on issues that remain as poignant and as relevant today as ever.

A free pdf of the anthology can be downloaded at the link below:

Bend your ear & listen closely

to the murmur of my heart.

A hummingbird has built her

nest there made from feathers,

leaves & thistledown.

I feel her wings thrum each

time you draw near.

Lie with me, we’ll tease the

nectar from our loins & feed

honey to her young.

First published in Lagan Press online: Poetry Originals (Ireland)

In the limbo between

dream & awakening I slip

inside the gathering

of your embrace.

Your sleep warm skin

cleaving fast to me

I am lost in a

revery of want.

All winter long we

sowed seeds, nested.

Melded to one another we

battled the cold as our days

shortened with the nights.

With the seasons’ thaw came

an untangling.

We awoke upon a different dawn

highlighting the paucity of our need.

Come summer all that remained were

fingerprints on the dusty shelves & a

palm print on the mirror.

After the Harvest

Forgotten detritus

in the depths of

Dionysus’ heart: the

dried petals of a rose

& an apple core, the

ghost of a song played

on a lyre.

4 Tanka

my insomnia

stretches hours spent without you

I stay up past dawn

thinking of you far away

& curse days of summer rain

lying on my bed

gazing at the rain falling

on skylight window

I imagine you astride me

as I rise upwards

hands holding my hands

as they cup your tender breasts

exquisite movement

as you quiver above me

your body taut as a bow

we will meet again

but until then let us recall

the long nights of spring

when we were almost lovers

moments away from joining

16 Haiku / Senryu

burning my notebooks

in a fire in the garden

sparks fly upward

ease me inside you

trembling like an autumn leaf

I am lost, again

your soft hands trembling

on the waistband of my jeans

precious memory

a wheatgrass vodka

to calm my turbulent mind

another might help

feeling it again

this pain as old as the world

another love lost

illusion gives birth

to absent realities ~

your dark mystery

in silent shadows

I see your dark mystery ~

lonely afternoon

I fall into sleep

in dreams I lie by your side

morning comes too soon

the land between us

the sea which separates us

bridged only by dreams

the July rains fall

as I count weeks without you

a blue moon above

the summer rain falls

washing away foolish tears

autumn in my heart

the bench where we kissed

is covered in fallen leaves

autumn come again

what keeps me from sleep?

the sight of the waning moon

from my closed window

as the sun rises

spider webs catch morning mist ~

these diamond days

in the autumn wind

her hair dancing like seaweed

on the shores of home

like two flightless birds

bathed in hard light of morning

this joyless coupling

Convorbiri Literare

I have a 5 tanka sequence & two 5 haiku sequences published in translation in the latest issue of ‘Convorbiri Literare,’ a Romanian literary journal. Many thanks to Dr. Iacob Olimpia for the translation work.

Tanka sequence

lay aside my book

& laze eyes closed on the bed

as church bells chime through

blissful drift of memory—

languorous summer Sunday.

my tongue parts your lips

traces, strokes, makes figure eights,

dips & dances free—

trapped in the hairs of my beard

the scent of concupiscence.

your smile is like a

baby’s fist wrapped around the

thumb of a stranger

the purity of your trust

as your soft touch guides me in.

our clothes on the floor

& us naked on the bed

fusing nerves & flesh

even our breath united

in pure joyful noise.

when we move apart

our skin resists the leaving

aches for the joining

to endure, longs to linger

on the plain of completion.

Haiku sequence

frost on the doorstep ~

undressing in the bedroom

a thousand leaves fall

talking through the night

until lips meet in a kiss ~

red ribboned sunrise

cheap cotton panties

mismatched bra on porcelain skin ~

the pretty redhead

flame red on pale skin

the ghost of her underwear ~

autumn leaves burning

as the door closes

a vague longing left behind ~

two sparrows in flight

Haiku sequence

insolent eye stare

challenging me to seduce ~

your mouth like bruised fruit

the curve of your ass

the slight swell of your belly ~

the moon & the sun

your young smooth dark limbs

wrapped around my ageing form ~

autumn turns to spring

long nights making love ~

clouds drifting across the moon

the pattern of dreams

sleep filled with dreaming ~

sweeping up the fallen leaves

I am young again
